It’s the most traveled trail in Castle Rock, and connects neighborhoods throughout the entire community. The East Plum Creek Trail southern extension is now almost complete. Join the celebration Friday, Sept. 6, to officially open the trail.
The public is invited from 5 to 6 p.m. to watch as runners from the East Plum Creek Trail 10K and Art Run 5K break the ceremonial ribbon and officially open the trail. Complementary food and giveaways will be available. Plus, attendees will receive a free drink coupon for a beverage later that night at First Fridays in Festival Park.
The opening ceremony will take place at the trailhead – west of Safeway off South Perry Street. The Town Trolley will make two round trips from the Town Hall parking lot to the trailhead. Pick up times at Town Hall are at 4:45 and 5 p.m.
East Plum Creek Trail travels the 6-miles along the scenic creek from Castle View High School to South Perry Street. The new southern extension travels the 2 miles from South Perry Street to Crystal Valley Parkway.
Completion of the entire East Plum Creek Trail corridor was included as a Town priority in the Council-approved 2015 Parks and Recreation Master Plan. A $1 million Connect Initiative Grant from Great Outdoors Colorado helped to provide 50 percent of the funding for construction.
Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) invests a portion of Colorado Lottery proceeds to help preserve and enhance the state’s parks, trails, wildlife, rivers and open spaces. GOCO’s independent board awards competitive grants to local governments and land trusts, and makes investments through Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Created when voters approved a Constitutional Amendment in 1992, GOCO has funded more than 4,700 projects in urban and rural areas in all 64 counties without any tax dollar support. These professionally timed races will begin at 5:30 p.m. Both the 5K and 10 K runners will travel south on East Plum Creek to the new extension, then return to Festival Park. 10K participants will run through the Station 152 firehouse before returning to the park.
All runners will receive a celebratory tie-dye T-shirt and commemorative medal. Registration and more information is available at CRgov.com/races.
