Taking some of the following steps could prevent many of these incidents and help you "outthink a thief."
Steps to prevent burglaries and trespasses
Motor vehicle trespasses are one of the more common crimes in Castle Rock.
Lock your vehicle at all times.
Park your vehicle in a garage as often as possible.
Do not leave items out in plain view (it entices perpetrators).
If possible, lock all registration, insurance and any other documents with personal information in the glove compartment.
Try not to keep possessions in your vehicle. (To reduce your losses remove money, jewelry and guns from the vehicle.)
Try not to leave car/house keys within the vehicle.
If the vehicle is left outside with a garage opener inside the vehicle, lock the door between your garage and home..
Residential burglaries also affect our residents.
Lock your doors when you leave your home.
Close your garage doors when the garage is not in use. This includes during daytime hours when you are not in the garage. Suspects have been seen walking through neighborhoods looking for open garage doors, which are considered an easy target.
National statistics indicate that residential burglaries occur from 9 to 11 a.m. when people typically are at work. Those who see suspicious activity surrounding homes - particularly during those peak hours - should notify the police department.
