Event canceled: National Trails Day celebrating Metzler Family Open Space

Saturday, June 3, 2023

Update 9:15 a.m. June 3: The National Trails Day event is canceled due to persistent rain and muddy trail conditions. Hike the new trails which are now completely accessible thanks to a 50-spot parking lot. Complete trail signage has also been installed.

Join us for two guided hikes at Metzler Family Open Space starting from the newly constructed trailhead parking lot. Both hikes will be led by Town staff and will be on unpaved single-track trails that are not stroller-friendly but are open to all ages. Pre-registration is required and space is limited.

8:15 a.m. Moderate Hike:

The first hike will begin at 8:15am and will be of moderate difficulty. Hike length is 3.0 miles and will travel past the historic homestead on Founder’s Vista Trail towards the forested eastern portion of the site, connect to the rocky Rancher’s Ridge Trail with an overlook, returning on Rosemary’s Ridge Trail then back to the trailhead on Gus’ Gulch Trail. Hike should take 1.5 hours.

8:30 a.m. Easy Hike:

The second hike will begin at 8:30am and its easier difficulty rating may be better suited for families with young children. Hike length is less than 2.0 miles and will travel past the historic homestead on Founder’s Vista Trail towards the forested eastern portion of the site, then return on the Gus’ Gulch Trail. Hike should take 1 hour.

Register for one of the hikes.

Booths at the event will include Parks and Recreation with local animal displays and snacks, Douglas Land Conservancy, Coffee Sarap with items for purchase, as well as the Castle Rock Parks and Trails Foundation with a self-guided Agents of Discovery activity. Agents of Discovery is a digital app that features interactive missions using augmented reality. It’s like Pokémon Go but for animals and nature! The Metzler Family Open Space Mission features 7 challenges and includes a prize when you’ve completed your Mission!
