The suspect in last week’s homicide investigation is in custody.

Matthew Buchanan, 32, was arrested in Monroe County, Florida, early Tuesday morning by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Buchanan was first named as a person of interest following Tuesday’s fire and death investigation in the Terrain neighborhood. Investigators later issued a warrant for his arrest for his involvement in the death of his mother.

“I’m so proud of our team for their diligent and quick work, and we hope this arrest brings some relief to our community,” Police Chief Jack Cauley said. “We are grateful to the many agencies who assisted us in locating this wanted person.”

Buchanan is being held at one of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office jails where he will await extradition to Colorado. He is facing numerous charges including Second Degree Murder, a Class 2 Felony. Buchanan’s booking photo is attached in this release.

This is an active and open investigation. No additional information will be released at this time.

The Castle Rock Police Department is officially declaring this week’s Terrain incident a homicide investigation with one suspect.

Matthew Buchanan, 32, was first named a person of interest following Tuesday’s fire and death investigation on Dove Valley Place. A warrant has now been issued for Buchanan’s arrest for his involvement in the death of his mother, 59-year-old Elizabeth Bjorlow of Castle Rock. The suspect’s whereabouts are unknown at this time and he may be traveling outside of Colorado. Authorities do not believe he is in the Castle Rock area.

“This incident has shaken our community,” Police Chief Jack Cauley said. “Our main focus is locating the suspect. We are working with multiple agencies across the region and following up on every possible lead. Anyone who has information regarding the suspect is asked to call police.”

Please contact the Castle Rock Police Department dispatch center at 303-663-6100 with any information regarding the investigation. If you see the suspect or his last known vehicle, please contact police immediately.

The Castle Rock Police Department is asking for the community’s help in locating a person of interest regarding Tuesday’s incident in the Terrain neighborhood.

The Castle Rock Dispatch Center received a call about a house fire near the intersection of Dove Valley Place and Paint Pony Circle just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. The fire was contained by 2:48 p.m. The fire investigation remains ongoing.

Matthew Buchanan, 32, was last seen driving a white Dodge minivan with a Colorado temporary license plate (3964372). Anyone who sees him or the vehicle is asked to call the Castle Rock Police Department at 303-663-6100.

One person was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Another person was found dead in the home. The Douglas County Coroner’s Office has legally identified the woman as 59-year-old Elizabeth Bjorlow, of Castle Rock.

The Castle Rock Police Department is co-investigating the death with the Douglas County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy has been completed. Results of the autopsy and ruling by the Coroner as to the cause and manner of death will be made available at the completion of the investigation.

“We know Castle Rock is a tight-knit community,” Castle Rock Police Chief Cauley said. “Any time there is a loss of life, it impacts us all. We have a number of resources and agencies working on this investigation. We ask the public to please call us if they have any additional information that can help.”

This remains an ongoing investigation.
