[ARCHIVED] Watch the Wild West come to life with a longhorn cattle drive July 29

Western Heritage Welcome

Castle Rock is a thriving community, but the Town’s western heritage is alive and well. Don’t miss a weekend full of activities to celebrate the community’s history and honor a longstanding tradition – the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo.

The Western Heritage Welcome kicks off the celebration and honors a time when large herds of cattle were driven through Downtown Castle Rock. Cowboys and city folk alike are invited to join the celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 29.

Watch as cowhands drive a herd of Texas longhorns from Rock Park, down Perry Street, and into a corral near Festival Park. Residents are invited to grab a spot along Perry Street for the best viewing location. More information is available at CRgov.com/WesternHeritage.

Following the cattle drive, mosey on over to Festival Park for a variety of western-themed activities including gold mining, old-time photos and more. Food and cocktails will also be available for purchase. Plus, the Park County Regulators, a team of Old West reenactment actors, will perform a wild west show around 6:45 p.m.

Starting at 5 a.m., parking will not be available on Perry Street. Parking will also be closed at Rock Park. At 4:30 p.m., Perry Street will be closed from Scott to South streets. Please keep safety in mind, and stay behind the protective barriers along Perry Street.

The country celebration will continue that evening when Josh Turner performs at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. For nearly two decades, Josh has been one of country music’s most recognizable voices. His hits include “Hometown Girl,” “Your Man” and “Long Black Train.” Tickets are available at douglascountyfairandrodeo.com.

The weekend celebration continues with the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo Parade at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 30. The old-fashioned parade starts on the south end of Town and continues through Downtown. And, following the parade, join an old-fashioned themed fair at Boots and Brews. The festival will have food trucks, beer and live music in Festival Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Get all the details at downtowncastlerock.com.

The Douglas County Fair and Rodeo runs through Aug. 7. Celebrate the roots of our community and give the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo the welcome it deserves.
