[ARCHIVED] All you have to do is “try” at annual youth triathlon Sept. 11

Tri the Rock, Sept. 11, Castle Rock Recreation Center

Young athletes grab your swimsuits, dust off your bikes and lace up your sneakers. It’s time for the Town’s annual Tri the Rock youth triathlon.

Get ready for a day of fun, food and prizes Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Castle Rock Recreation Center, 2301 Woodlands Blvd. Please note, the location has been changed this year due to construction at Butterfield Crossing Park.

Tri the Rock inspires kids to get active, help others and try their personal best. Young athletes of all ability levels, ages 5 to 18, are invited to participate. Registration is available at CRgov.com/TriTheRock.

The race distances are:

  • Ages 5-6: 25-meter swim (one pool length), 1-kilometer bike ride (one lap around Butterfield Park) and a 500-meter run
  • Ages 7-10: 50-meter swim (two pool lengths, down and back), 4-kilometer bike ride and a 1-kilometer run
  • Ages 11-14: 100-meter swim (four pool lengths, down and back twice), 8-kilometer bike ride and a 2-kilometer run
  • Ages 15-18: 100-meter swim, 16-kilometer bike ride and 3-miile run

The registration fee is $65 and includes a T-shirt, goody bag and post-race meal. Plus, the local school with the most participants will get to display the traveling Tri the Rock trophy for an entire year. The registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 9.

Bike racks open at 6 a.m. for ages 7-18, and the transition area closes at 7:15 a.m. to prepare for the first race. The races begin at 7:30 a.m. with age groups following in order from oldest to youngest. The race for ages 5-6 does not begin until 10:30 a.m.

Is your child excited to give the event a try for the first time? Make sure they’re prepared with a free informational clinic hosted Sunday, Sept. 4. Participants ages 7-18 are invited at 1 p.m. Younger athletes (ages 5-6) are invited at 1:45 p.m. The clinic is designed to ease anxiety for kids and their parents and will include a review of the racecourse and additional information. Space is limited, and registration is required.
