The local historic landmark designation of Cantril School was moved forward, and a proposed North Meadows traffic calming plan was approved, at Town Council’s Nov. 21 meeting.
Here is a closer look:
Cantril School local historic landmark designation — Town Council approved the first reading of a local historic landmark designation of Cantril School, located at 312 Cantril St. Constructed in 1897, Cantril School is a two-story, Italian Villa-style building with a three-story bell tower built from locally quarried rhyolite. In 1984, Cantril School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places under the name Castle Rock Elementary School, with Cantril School listed as the common name, and on the State Register of Historic Places.
Town Council, after recommendation by the Historic Preservation Board, may designate as a landmark an individual structure or an integrated group of structures and features on a single lot or site having special historical or architectural value. If approved on second and final reading, the local landmarking of Cantril School could make it more competitive for historic grant funds that could be used for restoration work.
North Meadows Drive traffic calming — Town Council approved the North Meadows Drive traffic calming plan. In 2022, homeowners in The Meadows contacted the Town regarding speeding concerns on North Meadows Drive between Elegant Street and Meadows Boulevard.
The traffic calming plan for North Meadows Drive includes installing three raised speed cushions to reduce speeds and striping a double yellow centerline around a sharp curve to keep motorists on their side of the road. Input on the plan was solicited from Town staff and residents. Implementation of the traffic calming measures could begin this year, weather permitting.
