Customer question: What percentage of water is above ground?
Matt Benak, Water Resources Manager:
Castle Rock Water just updated its Water Resources Strategic Master Plan which was approved by Town Council in April. This is the document that answers the question: Where does our water come from? The first long-term water plan, created in 2006, projected for Castle Rock to obtain 75% renewable water supplies by 2050. Renewable water supplies are those that are replenished each year. Renewable water typically consists of surface water from our local streams, storage in area reservoirs, imported water and reuse water. In contrast, deep groundwater aquifers, a non-renewable source, take generations to replenish. This underground source is currently a primary water supply source for many South Metro communities and is slowly being mined out.
In 2021, renewable water accounted for 32.8% of Castle Rock's water supply and so far in 2022, renewable water accounts for 47.2% of our total supply.
